Welcome to the historic Geary Theater
The beautiful, historic Geary Theater—rising from the rubble of the catastrophic earthquake and fires of 1906 and immediately hailed as the “perfect playhouse”—has been our home since the beginning. Dubbed a “splendid temple of drama” by the local press of the day, its stage was graced by the performances of such notables as Sarah Bernhardt, Clark Gable, Marlene Dietrich, Boris Karloff, and Mae West. This striking historical monument, now known as The Geary Theater, is as versatile as it is impressive.
When the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake ripped a gaping hole in the ceiling, destroying the proscenium arch and dumping tons of debris on the first six rows of orchestra seats, the San Francisco community decided the show would go on—they rallied together to raise a record-breaking $27.5 million to rebuild the theater. The Geary has since been home to a number of groundbreaking productions of classical works and new translations creatively colliding with exceptional contemporary theater.
The full resources of this unique classic space, which boasts 1,040 seats (501 in the orchestra, 290 in the mezzanine, and 234 in the balcony) can be employed for a variety of purposes, including theatrical presentations, lectures, meetings, screenings, and grand receptions. In addition to its grand auditorium, The Geary includes three meeting and lounge areas for special events and pre- and postshow mingling: Fred’s Columbia Room, a 1,346-square-foot downstairs lounge named for A.C.T.’s beloved doorman, Fred Geick, who greeted patrons for more than 30 years with a cheerful “Hello, doctor” or “Good evening, baroness”; the top-floor Garret Room, a private space for receptions and meetings; and the stunning Sky Lobby, located between the two balconies and overlooking bustling Geary Street.
Truly a fixture of our San Francisco community, The Geary Theater is located in the heart of the Union Square shopping and theatrical district, close to public transportation and some of the finest hotels, restaurants, and cultural treasures the city has to offer.
On the fifth floor of The Geary, you'll find The Garret, a private fifth-floor cabaret space overlooking Geary Street that can be used for everything from dinner parties to cocktail receptions to special preshow performances by actors in our M.F.A. Program. A flexible and intimate room that can be arranged in a number of ways, from theater seating to banquet dining to a boardroom- or classroom-style setup, The Garret comes equipped with a catering kitchen and an LED-lighted feature wall, offering visitors a state-of-the-art experience.
