Where should I start?

Check out our recommendations below!

I’m a beginner!

  • Try Introduction to Acting to learn the basics of acting and theater-making skills. This course is also great for building confidence and learning to become a better collaborator in a variety of contexts.
Try Introduction to Improv or Introduction to Clowning to rediscover your sense of play, develop your imagination, learn to react creatively to a variety of challenges, and to better connect with people from all walks of life.

I’ve done some theater and/or taken classes, but it’s been a while!

  • Try Acting 2 if you’re comfortable with some memorization and interested in returning to scene work.
  • Try Introduction to Speech and Diction or Introduction to Alexander Technique to get more comfortable in your body, and to learn to be heard and understood!

I’ve done quite a bit of theater and am looking for a challenge!

  • Try one of our Acting Focus classes, offering experiences with specific styles, techniques, or writers. These classes aren’t always offered every session so jump at the opportunity to take these and add new skills to your resume. Step outside of your comfort zone and try Acting for the Camera, Musical Theater Performance, or one of our many Physical movement classes.
  • Try an Audition Intensive. It’s a great opportunity to find new material that also offers students a chance to revisit or refine existing audition material. This course is the perfect place for aspiring and working actors to make actionable choices to help them achieve their artistic and professional goals.

The Application Process

I'm a new student. What do I need to do to register?

Follow this link and be sure to complete the New Student Questionnaire when prompted at the end of the registration process. All new students are asked to answer these questions to ensure that they have registered for a class that is appropriate for their level of experience.

Is there an age requirement?

Studio A.C.T. students must be 19 years of age or older. If you are coming to Studio A.C.T. after attending the Young Conservatory, you are still considered a new student and will need to fill out a new student questionnaire for Studio A.C.T. when prompted at the end of the registration process.

Do I need to have acting or stage experience to register for a Studio A.C.T. class?

No. We offer introductory classes in addition to our more advanced classes. Please look both at session listings and course descriptions to see if the class is a good fit for you.

I've sent in a new student questionnaire, but Studio A.C.T. is not enrolling/in session right now. Do I have to fill out another one for the next session
?

No. We will keep your questionnaire on file.

I'm a returning student. Do I need to fill out a new student questionnaire?

No. All returning students can register for their classes online.

I'm a returning student. Can I show up at registration on the first day of classes to enroll?

No. All students, even returning students, must register before the first day of classes.

I've registered online for a class. Now what?

Once you have registered for a class online, Studio A.C.T. will send you a confirmation that you are enrolled in your class. Students registering for advanced classes or classes requiring specific prerequisites may be contacted by Studio A.C.T. for further confirmation.

I've paid for a class, but it's full. Is there a waitlist?

If you try to register for a class and are told that it is full, please email studio@act-sf.org to be added to that waitlist. If you are on the waitlist, do not show up to class unless you are contacted by the Conservatory Associate that a spot is available for you and you have paid your tuition.

The Program

Where are classes held?

Classes are most often held in the studios at 30 Grant Avenue in San Francisco. This is also where the Conservatory offices are located. If your class will take place at a different location, the office will communicate this to you prior to your first class.

What is the withdrawal and refund policy?

If there is not sufficient enrollment, the course will be canceled, and all tuition paid refunded in full. Requests for withdrawal from the course by the student must be received in the office in writing 24 hours prior to the first class session. In the event of withdrawal, class tuition is refunded while the non-refundable registration and library fees are withheld. Should a withdrawal and refund request be made after the deadline, a $20 processing fee will be withheld in addition to the standard non-refundable fees. Refunds of any kind cannot be processed after the second class session. The request MUST be made in writing (by email or fax). Requests in person or by telephone will not be accepted. If faxed, the request must be sent to 415.834.3210. If emailed, the request must be sent to studio@act-sf.org. The school's receipt of the request will be confirmed by phone or email. Please allow ten (10) working days to process.

What tuition discounts do you offer?

Current A.C.T. subscribers receive a 20% reduction of tuition for one course during the season. This offer is not available online. Please call 415.439.2441 to receive either discount.

May I visit the school for a tour?

Due to the complex scheduling of our studios, we are unable to offer tours of our facilities. If you are in the area, a conservatory associate will be happy to speak with you about our actor training programs. Please call 415.439.2441 for more information.

Is financial aid available for Studio A.C.T.?

Studio A.C.T. does not offer financial aid. However, we do offer a “50% now, 50% first day of class” option. You will see this option during your online registration.
